It’s beginning to get chillier, and there is no better place to be than Rotorua with all our magical hot pool spots! Holidays can be stressful, with all the organising, getting the kids sorted and then finally arriving at your destination. Whether you’re a visitor or local, here are our must-visit hot pool spots in Rotorua that you’ll absolutely love.
Waikite Valley Hot Pools
A popular stopover on the way to or from Taupo, these pools are approx 30 mins south of Rotorua and boast natural geothermal pools that get refilled daily. There are five geothermal pools to choose from, all rich in minerals with great healing properties and there is a large slightly cooler pool which is perfect for the kids. The drive out to the valley is stunning, it’s a very rural New Zealand backdrop complete with lots of steaming vents as you get closer to the hot pools. The pool facilities had a recent upgrade in 2023 and have a great little cafe on-site where you can grab a bite to eat!
Top Tip: Be sure to explore their eco-trail walk!

Polynesian Spa
One of Rotorua’s most famous hot pool spots, this must-visit is right in the heart of Rotorua and has been operating since 1972. They have a range of different areas with a variety of different pool options, our favourite would be the Pavilion Pool section which boasts eight different geothermal pools, which are a mix of both alkaline and acidic water so you can try both! The Polynesian Spa also offers a variety of spa treatments including massages and mud wraps – you can easily spend half a day relaxing here.
Top Tip: You must try the Little Lato Gelato from the cafe after your soak, there are so many great flavours!

Secret Spot Hot Tubs
If you are wanting a more intimate and private hot pool experience, the Secret Spot Hot Tubs are a great little hideaway to visit! Different to most other pools in Rotorua these cedar tubs are filled with fresh spring water sourced from high in the forest and won’t leave you with that classic sulphur smell! You can either book a tub for 45 minutes or just stop in for a drink or bite to eat and enjoy a shinny dip in one of their mini foot tubs. They do offer food and drinks on-site with the highlight being the drinks service to your tub while you relax!

Looking for a unique and natural mud bathing experience, Hell’s Gate offers customers the opportunity to bathe in the healing geothermal mud and soothing mineral waters while overlooking the impressive and historic geothermal park. You can also take part in the guided or self-guided walk through the active geothermal park and stop into their Maori Carving studio.
Top Tip: If going for a mud bath either hire swimwear or take an older pair, they will soak up all the mud smells and you don’t want to ruin your new holiday swimwear!

The newest hot pool facility in Rotorua, only 250m from Aura on the Rotorua Lakefront. This unique spa is driven by te ao Maori principals and practices and offers a variety of hot pool and spa treatments which use the healing properties of nature for a total relaxation experience.
