Rotorua captivates travellers with bubbling geothermal magic, vibrant Māori traditions, and adrenaline-filled adventures. But there are some burning questions people often ask:

Is Rotorua safe to visit? Even with the geothermal activity?

Most definitely! Our geothermal landscapes are carefully monitored, and as long as visitors stay on the marked pathways, they can enjoy these unique natural wonders. Rotorua is a city shaped by geothermal magic. Locals have lived alongside bubbling pools and steaming vents for generations, and many homes and businesses make the most of this natural energy. At Aura, we’re proud to use geothermal heat in some truly special ways, from our magic mineral pools and unique geothermal steam box (perfect for cooking delicious treats) to the radiators that keep our rooms warm and toasty all year round. And rest assured: there are no active volcanoes in Rotorua. The last major eruption in the region was Mount Tarawera in 1886, more than a century ago. Rotorua’s geothermal wonders are not only breathtaking. They’re safe, sustainable, and a core part of what makes this place so unforgettable.

When is the best time to visit Rotorua?

Rotorua is the perfect place to visit, all year round. If you love warm, sunny days, the best time to visit is between November and April, when temperatures are generally higher and conditions are drier. Rotorua’s vibrant greenery comes from its regular rainfall, but even in winter, you’ll find crisp blue skies, mild temperatures, and plenty to do. It’s worth checking what events are on during your stay. Big sporting events and concerts bring an buzzing energy to the city, but they can also make it a little harder to secure spots at activities and restaurants. Booking ahead is the best way to ensure you don’t miss out. No matter the season, Rotorua offers beautiful scenery, relaxing geothermal experiences, and unforgettable adventures.
