Rotorua is known for it’s vast lakes and amazing water colours. With Summer starting to heat up the many lakes in the Rotorua region become popular with swimmers, boaters and water enthusiasts. We’ve narrowed down a few of the best spots to take a dip in this Summer, all easily accessible from Aura Accommodation.
Lake Tikitapu also known as the Blue Lake is a crowd favourite during the warmer months. Due to the high volumes of pumice and rhyolite, the water takes on a vivid blue colour. Popular with the locals this lake has an abundance of swimming areas along with plenty of BBQ sites to enjoy some lunch. The Blue Lake is located just a 14 minute drive from Aura making it the perfect place to take the family for a day out in the sun.

Lake Rotoma
Lake Rotoma has the best water quality of all the Rotorua lakes, and once you’re there, it’s not hard to understand why it’s popular during Summer. Lake Rotoma is 40-minute drive from Aura Accommodation, along state highway 30 heading towards Kawerau. There is plenty of shore around the lake to relax and enjoy the New Zealand sun before taking a dip in Lake Rotoma’s crystal clear waters.
This smaller lake is surrounded by beautiful forest, creating an amazing landscape for a Summer swim. Lake Okareka boasts a several walking tracks and the boardwalk over the wetlands. The boardwalk path leads to a picturesque small quiet beach perfect for a swim. Be sure to pack your camera for some amazing photo opportunities along the way. Located just a 10-minute drive from Rotorua’s CBD, Lake Okareka makes for an easily accessible swimming location.
